Institute for Energy, Facility & Real Estate Management

About the Institute

The Institute for Energy, Facility & Real Estate Management is part of the degree course of Facility Management & Real Estate Management and Energy & Sustainability Management of the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tyrol. In the year 2005 it was established as “Immobilien-Benchmarking-Institut (IBI)” as part of competence-constitution program FHplus, belonging to the Austrian research funding corporation (FFG). Due to the extension of the field of research in the year 2010, the institute was renamed into “Institut für betriebliches Immobilienmanagement – Facility & Real Estate Management Research Institute (IBI)”. In the course of an increased internationalization of the degree course the name “Facility & Real Estate Management Research Institute” was used from now on. Since 2015 we seek to amend the renaming of the institute based on the existing coherence between the degree course and the institute. As part of a renewal of the institute’s strategy, the institute was named “Institut für Facility Management & Immobilienwirtschaft (FMI)" until September 2020. In the course of the expansion of the research activities and strong interlocking of the study program areas Facility Management & Real Estate Management and Energy & Sustainability Management, the name of the institute was changed to Institute for Energy, Facility & Real Estate Management.

Focus: Real Estate data analysis

The focus is on processing projects, which require elicitation, analysis and interpretations of real estate-related data. In the last years the institute has achieved in this an international renown. Beside the process of research projects we also offer purposeful and scientific consulting for companies and the public sector.

Focus: Identification of potentials and analysis of renewable & sustainable energies

In the course of the interlocking of the study program areas, a new focus of the research activities developed in the field of energy management and sustainability. Here, the focus is on the potential analysis of renewable energies for the sustainable generation of electricity. In view of the wind and photovoltaic sector, research activities are carried out at the institute to determine their potential and relevance on the local area in the course of the Austrian climate and energy strategy #mission2030. These activities are rounded off with research in the field of smart metering to determine the connection and interface between electricity generation by power plants and electricity consumption by customers.

Philosophy: A holistic view of real estates

We are researching & developing practice-related & independently on the interaction between humans & buildings, as well as technology & economy, in order that real estates and their environment can offer a maximum of user satisfaction, productivity and efficiency considering using a minimum of resources (ecology, economy, human resources). We consider the entire real estate life cycle, from development and planning through construction, commissioning, the long period of use and reuse, as well as the renovation and demolition.
